About The Artist
Gligor Čemerski (1940 -2016) is one of the most prominent and prolific Macedonian modern artists- a painter, mosaicist, and graphic artist, and author of numerous monumental achievements. His entire artistic poetics is characterized by autochthonous expressionism, existential unrest, and erudition in the field of cultural history.
Educated in Belgrade and specializing in Paris, he maintained a regular presence in the French capital and had a long-standing affiliation with the prestigious Galerie du Fleuve.
His monumental achievements cemented his status in Yugoslav art, and among them stand out the massive 320 sq. meter mosaic complex for the Monument to Freedom in Kočani, as well as monumental works in Skopje, Vrutok, Kavadarci, and Mavrovo, and the large mosaic diptych in the Presidential Palace of the Republic of North Macedonia – Villa Vodno.
His oeuvre is represented in numerous prestigious international collections, including the Vatican Museum, the World Bank Gallery (Washington, D.C.), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, etc. He was a member of the Macedonian Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. For his contribution to art, he was the recipient of numerous national and international awards.
